As the game of Warhammer Conquest develops, new warlords and units lead to new strategies. One thing that has been introduced is the idea that the planet colours are significant. For example Broderick Worr (see below) loves himself some green planets!

What this can mean is that if you’re lucky you can get a significant advantage by the planets coming out in your favour. For example in a game I played last week as Worr, the first four planets were all green. I had a great start and an easy win. But it could have been that only one of the first five were green, then my job would have been much harder. Of the ten planets each colour is represented six times, so the worst you can get is only one out of the first five, but the best you can get is all five of the first shown being of your favoured colour. This is obviously a major random factor in your matchup.

First con of the year for me over at Bucklow Hill, south of Manchester saw me with a game of Prague prearranged, part of the Battles of the Age of Reason (BAR) series from Clash of Arms. I hadn’t played BAR for a while but I’ve always loved the series and having not managed to get much wargaming in over the last few years I was looking forward to a meaty game.

By the time I got there Thursday morning I had an absolutely streaming cold but luckily I still felt fairly ok. Although my nose would stop running eventually the cold continued to get worse. How brave am I?

I grabbed the other two that were there, Tom and Richard, and introduced them to a new game, Automobiles. This is a race game, but also a deck building game, without cards. You’re no doubt confused by now but to explain you buy cubes that allow you to move on the track, white grey and black cubes move you on the progressively longer white, grey and black spaces, or take an action of some type, eg remove wear from your discarded cubes, move faster if you’re lower down the track, take wear to move faster etc. The coloured cues actions are shown by cards, and there’s one chosen from a selection for each colour so the game is different each time. Any cubes you don’t use in a turn can be taken as credit towards buying more cubes, hence the deck building aspect. I think this is a very original and exciting variant on the deck building genre. Not only do you have to think about what cubes/cards you wish to put in your bag/deck, but positioning on the track becomes very important. For example in a game I played this week, one of my fellow players ended up stuck when she was only able to reach the white part of the track due to another player blocking her, but she had no white cubes. And this was two spaces before the end of the track on the last lap! Highly recommended.

If you’ve ever wanted to act as your favourite Star Wars characters, or at least as less powerful versions of those to start with, we’re starting a Star Wars RPG campaign suitable for absolute beginners this week at the shop. I’ll be running it Sunday afternoons from 12 to about 4pm for four weeks to give everyone a chance to see if they enjoy the system.

It has been just over two months since my last tournament, so it was good to get playing competitively again. If I am being honest, I have hardly played any games of Conquest since playing at the regionals we hosted back in May.  I managed to get a few games in during the week before our Summer League kicked off and was reasonably happy with the Baharroth deck that I had made, so decided to use that .

Some new boardgames and Pokemon sets in this week.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak is a fast game for 3-7 players in which everyone gets a hidden role, each with a special ability. (No plain “villagers” here!) In the course of a single morning, your village will decide who among them is a werewolf…because all it takes is finding one werewolf to win! New in the shop today we have the latest Pokemon set, XY5 Primal Clash, plus Collectors Albums, The Warhammer Conquest expansion Gift of the Ethereals and the brand new X-Files board game where 1-4 agent players team up against one opponent who controls the Smoking Man and his nefarious network.

Also new in is the Crisis Expansion for the DC Deck-Building Game which introduces co-operative gameplay and “Impossible Mode”

Alchemists, a game where two to four budding alchemists compete to discover the secrets of their mystical art. Points can be earned in various ways, but most points are earned by publishing theories – correct theories, that is — and therein lies the problem.

In The Ancient World, players compete to grow the largest and most influential city-state by managing citizens, treasury, and military and by defeating titans. Players take turns sending citizens to take special actions or using military cards to attack titans. One of the actions a citizen can perform is to build Empire cards, which give more citizens, money, and abilities.

There’s also a new Machi Koro Expansion: The Harbor which expands the Machi Koro base game by adding thirteen new types of cards: ten new establishments, one new starting establishment, and two new landmarks. The expansion adds more complexity to the game, including seaports and airports that can be upgraded with additional boats (in the case of seaports) or facilities. Players also now need to complete six landmarks instead of four. Finally, with more establishments in the game, players choose only ten for use in any single game, mixing up what’s available each time you bring it to the table. It also increases the number of players to 5.

Excellent Warhammer 40K Conquest tournament on Saturday. I went 2-2 with Chaos/DE but would have gone 3-1 if I hadn’t made a stupid mistake against Tim in my third match.

I lent out my SM/Tau deck to a bloke who went 1-3 with it I think. Then last night I found out SM/Tau had come top two in the World’s finals with similar decks to mine. Last time I lend a deck out lol.

Warhammer 40K Conquest LCG has been incredibly popular here in Lincoln. The game is easy to learn but subtle and has lots of decision points. Being an LCG you don’t have to worry about searching for elusive cards!
